In the second installment of our Meet Our Underwriter series, we meet up with Sarah Hainer, the Regional Sales Manager on our Commercial Insurance Solutions team. Let’s see what she had to say.

You’ve been at Gore Mutual for nearly a year now. Tell us a little about your professional experience before joining us.

Prior to Gore Mutual, I worked at Intact Insurance for six years in their commercial P&C department. Before that, I was a broker for eight years with three brokerages and did personal lines, farm, small commercial and commercial auto.

What have you been working on since coming to Gore Mutual?

Before I started at Gore Mutual, I viewed the company as a small commercial insurer. Once I got here, I realized that we needed to change the perception of our commercial capabilities in the marketplace. In the past year, we’ve been working to shift that perception by doing more manufacturing, wholesaling, business professionals and, of course, contractors. Part of that was capitalizing on the strengths and expertise of our team so that we could underwrite these bigger, more complex accounts.

Process wise, we’re looking to create a lot more efficiencies. We recognize that more complex submissions take more time to underwrite. We need to be able to find some efficiencies, so our team can focus on what they’re great at – underwriting.

What do you want brokers to know about our contractors product?

Let’s start with the small, one or two-person contractor shop. Brokers can go right onto our easy-to-use GoBroker portal to quote and bind. They can also use it to issue a certificate of insurance right away. Our brokers tell us all the time that they love being able to instantly provide their customers with certificates of insurance to help them land the jobs that they’re bidding on.

For larger contractors, like home builders or large HVAC contractors, we have a wholistic product where we can provide the property and casualty policy, the IRCA or fleet coverage and the contractor’s E&O all through Gore Mutual.

We also have extension packages. We can tailor the coverage extensions based on whatever the client is doing to make sure if fits their operation.

Why do contractors need E&O coverage?

Many contractors will have some element of design in their work as they problem solve solutions for their customers. Because of this, we offer E&O coverage along with our CGL to round out our contractor offering and provide much more comprehensive protections. Sometimes a grey area exists between the CGL and E&O when it comes to contracting, so we offer both of these in one simple solution to ensure we’re providing full coverage.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I was told to look at my career like a paint by numbers painting. You start with a black and white picture with all these little sections with numbers in them. You match each number to a specific colour and you end up with a beautiful picture. Each number represents a skill. There are going to be some colours that you don’t like – those are skills that you’re not so good at. The point is to keep trying and filling in all the numbers, even on the stuff you don’t like, so you can have a well-rounded skill set. When you feel like your picture is complete, you’re ready to move on to the next picture.

What is something people might not know about you?

My husband and I love fishing. We often go steelhead fishing along the Lake Huron shoreline.
